Video Fridays: Wintergatan – Marble Machine (Music Instrument using 2000 Marbles)

This is kind’a the opposite of synthetic-virtual musical instruments which have dominated modern musical recording and performance for the past 60 years. Electronics are used but it’s powered by and driven by a hand crank and wooden switches controlled by a human musician. The mind behind this contraption is an accomplished bass player who used CAD technology, 3D printers and laser-cutters to craft this machine, but also used glue, wood and wood clamps to put it together. It’s an interesting combination of something mechanized and something expressing human artistry. Enjoy.
